Hello, world! 🌍 My name is Victor Gybels (b. 1996, Uccle, Belgium). I began my practice in sound art, creating installations and performances, and have since expanded into visual work, including experimental photography and video. Music is a central part of my practice; I run In Unison, a label dedicated to experimental/electronic music, and have released music on various labels.

Art critic Yves Joris on my work. I like this perspective because it describes me as a photographer.

“…Victor Gybels fotografeert de zee op A4-formaat en laat haar bijna verdwijnen in licht en atmosfeer. Zijn Sint-Idisbald - een plek aan de Belgische kust die hem naar eigen zeggen diep heeft geraakt - is hier niet als document aanwezig maar als stemming, als visueel akkoord. Dat past in deze ruimte, op deze locatie, waar de Noordzee buiten het raam hetzelfde doet: aanwezig zijn zonder zich te verklaren…”

LYL Radioshow 06/07/2022

Radiomix I put together for LYL Radio containing only unreleased material and live recordings made between 2020 and 2022. The computer on which all of these musical projects were stored has since crashed, and all of the recordings were lost, turning this radiomix into an unexpected archive.

There was also a certain naïveté to my music-making process back then that I have since lost. I tend to overthink things nowadays, and because of that I make far less music than I used to. I often look back at this period when trying to recapture some of that energy.

Fiorucci made me Hardcore by Mark Leckey (1999)

I have to include this mythic video by Mark Leckey, as it has had an enormous impact on me. Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore completely changed the way I looked at found footage and expanded my understanding of what art could be. It opened up a new way of thinking about images, editing, and the emotional potential of existing material. Leckey remains a lasting influence on my practice.
